CAM boundary conditions at Illinois

The University of Illinois portion of this project involves creating high-resolution Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model simulations of Alaska. These regional simulations will span several years and will be forced at the lateral boundaries by output from an atmospheric model (CAM) at a typical climate model resolution.

The first step in this process involves creating the multi-year CAM simulation from which to gather output for the lateral boundary conditions. The CAM simulations will be run with prescribed surface boundary fields of SST and sea ice and will use prescribed observations of solar constant and greenhouse gas and aerosol concentrations. As a proof-of-concept, we have performed a year-long simulation of the CAM at T85 resolution - (256 longitudes x 128 latitudes) using surface boundary conditions starting in Sept. 1979 on our department linux cluster.

Our next step is to get updated SST and sea ice boundary conditions for the 2000s decade and run the simulation for that decade - our study period.
